Tools and Tool Care: Type A Tried and True Series

One of our absolute favorite spaces to transform is, hands-down, a garage. With the proclivity of being a dumping ground for all the excess, junk, and “I will get to it later”, no space rivals the same opportunity for such jaw-dropping transformations.

Now, let me paint a picture for you: a garage workshop where every wrench, drill bit, and power tool has its own cozy spot, where chaos is replaced by calm, and finding the right tool is as easy as grabbing your morning coffee. Sounds like a dream? With the right tools – both literally and figuratively – it's totally achievable.

Today, I'm pulling back the curtain on our favorite tool organizers for your garage. These are the gems that have earned a permanent place in our toolkit 😉. We’ve tried just about everything and know what works, and what doesn’t… So if you're ready, grab a seat (or a toolbox) and let's dive in together!

Long Hanging Tools

When it comes to reclaiming precious floor space in your garage while keeping long-handled tools organized, our two standout solutions emerge: wall-mounted utility tracks and pegboards.

Wall-Mounted Tracks + Hooks:

The Elfa utility track is without a doubt our favorite option for organizing everything awkward. Long Hanging tools, chairs, wheelbarrows, equipment, leaf blowers, ladders, kids toys, bikes, you name it… we’ve probably hung it.

These systems can be mounted by themselves on a wall, integrated into the entire wall-mounted Elfa system, or you can directly mount the accessory hooks to a wall stud without the track.

With a plethora of hooks and accessories to choose from, the options are endless and the quality is first in its class! Although they are sadly discontinuing the large utility hooks for the classic system, the Container Store has created an even more enhanced version with Garage +, with more hooks than ever. We have absolutely fallen in love with this new line!

Pegboard Hooks:

The pegboard is the Swiss Army knife of garage organization. Its design allows for easy customization – simply attach hooks, bins, and other accessories to create a personalized storage system tailored to your tools. Whether it's rakes, shovels, or brooms, pegboard hooks provide a versatile and adaptable solution.

Plus, as your tool collection evolves, so can your pegboard setup, offering endless flexibility without the need for additional hardware. The other bonus? It’s so budget friendly! We typically do not mount these systems in our jobs, but when they are already in a space, we love utilizing them!

Elfa Pegboard Systems

As you likely know by now, we love Elfa, and utilize it often. You can learn more about Elfa in our Garage Systems on a Budget blog post! One of our most used accessories of the system is the pegboard. We use this for all types of small hand tools and hardware, and so much more. Think of the versatility of pegboards, but magnetic and with the magic touch of Elfa 🪄.

Drawer Organization for Tools and Hardware

Drawer Cups

The key to maintaining any drawer: modular drawer cups. Investing in quality drawer organizers create designated compartments for all your different types of tools, bits and bolts. Without them, drawers can quickly fall into chaos, which not only leads to frustration when trying to find something in a pinch but also a higher likelihood of double purchasing hardware you already have. We also love that you can grab the cups and take it with you, wherever you may need them!

Tip: Take a quick measurement to see which fit your drawers the best!

Clear Bin Storage That Lasts!

Our secret weapon for conquering garage chaos? A sleek, transparent army of bins, capable of taming any amount of clutter. No more digging through dusty boxes and half broken dark storage bins. We’ve tried a LOT of options and we always come back our three favorites in garage spaces, and we can’t get enough of them.

Multi-Purpose Bins

What we love: These come in a wide variety of widths + sizes allowing you to break down your trove into as many categories as you need. Bonus: They are so affordable and great quality!

European Crate

What we love: These are thick and sturdy, holding up to whatever challenge we give it. They fit most any storage shelving space and come in two sizes.

Plastic Storage Bins with Handles

What we love: These are SO affordable, come in all shapes, sizes and colors. These bins are great for low profile spaces, shelving and we will even use them as drawer organizers! We typically go with the white handle bins within the home but for garage spaces, we typically opt for clear or smoke!

Type A Tool Care 101: Keeping Your Gear in Top Shape

One of the largest benefits of getting a garage in order is to keep your tools and investments in prime condition. Owning quality tools is one thing; keeping them in pristine condition is another. Proper maintenance not only prolongs the lifespan of your gear but also ensures optimal performance. Here are some essential tips for maintaining and caring for your tools:

1. Cleanliness is Key: After each use, take a few minutes to clean your tools. Wipe off any dirt, debris, or excess oil using a clean rag or brush. For stubborn grime, use a mild detergent and water solution. Remember to dry your tools thoroughly to prevent rust and corrosion.

2. Rust Prevention: Speaking of rust, it's the enemy of every tool enthusiast. To keep rust at bay, store your tools in a dry environment with low humidity. Consider investing in silica gel packets or rust inhibitors to absorb moisture and protect your gear. For existing rust, gently scrub the affected areas with steel wool or a rust remover solution.

3. Lubrication: Keep your tools operating smoothly by lubricating moving parts regularly. Apply a small amount of lubricant – such as WD-40 or a silicone-based spray – to the hinges and joints. Be sure to wipe away any excess to prevent buildup!

4. Sharpness Matters: Sharp tools are not only safer to use but also more efficient. Regularly inspect blades, bits, and cutting edges for signs of dullness or damage and sharpen or replace them as needed.

5. Proper Storage: Protect your tools from damage and loss by storing them in designated toolboxes, chests, or cabinets. There are also handy padded universal cases you can get for most any of your precious power tools! These investments keep everything in its rightful place and prevent damage from bumping into each other in drawers and bins.
